I was wandering in the garden today and found a gem-like ant. So I shot a photo, did a Google, and voila: it’s one of more than 100 species of Australian Golden-Tailed Spiny Ant.
These are also known as Golden Ant, Golden Spiny Ant, and Elegant Spiny Ant (no wonder – this one is so photogenic!). It was probably foraging for pollen before I turned up with a noisy phone camera.
Who knew that I’d also discover a world of insect-loving people in my five-minute research session? YouTube comments were certainly enthusiastic. See more Golden Ant action here … and here … and in your yard if you’re in Queensland!
I’ll be keeping an eye out for more tiny-creature gems!
